Overview

Alfonso Iglesia is a Spanish lawyer and arbitrator with over 35 years of experience, specializing in international commercial and investor-state arbitration, with a particular emphasis on construction-related disputes. He has been a member of the Madrid Bar Association since 1989.

Alfonso leads the International Arbitration Group at Cuatrecasas, one of the leading Spanish legal firms with a wide presence in Iberoamerica. Prior to joining Cuatrecasas in 1998, he worked as in-house counsel at ACS Group (a prominent international construction group), being in charge of the legal advice on international matters.

Professional experience

Alfonso Iglesia has extensive expertise as lead counsel in both national and international arbitration and court proceedings across a variety of legal matters. He is particularly specialized in construction, engineering, energy, and civil liability disputes. Additionally, he regularly serves as an arbitrator.

He has participated in ad hoc arbitrations, UNCITRAL arbitrations, and arbitrations administered by prominent international arbitration institutions such as the ICC, ICSID, and PCA, as well as arbitration courts in Spain and other Iberoamerican jurisdictions.

In the construction sector, Alfonso has represented clients in disputes arising from project execution in a wide range of countries, including Spain, Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. His advisory services encompass all phases, from contract negotiation to representation in judicial and arbitration settings, as well as negotiation procedures, mediation, expert determination, and dispute boards.
